In a S.E. Asian country, a religious lady recently stated that "It would be perilous for wives who do not obey their husbands."

In the USA, a mainstream Christian denomination states in their "Article of Faith and Message" that
" ... A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation."
They passed the above having referred to the Bible.

Ephesians 5: 22-23
"Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ
is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior."
Without malice or disrespect to any religious groups, but with great difficulty in accepting, I would like to ask the questions,
What does "obey", "submit" or "be subject to" mean, in our present day term?
Were not women and men created as equal - both being in God's own image?

[1] “...What does "obey", "submit" or "be subject to" mean, in our present day term ?”
To understand their meanings in our present day term is to understand that the principal purpose of Ephesians 5: 22-23 is to harmonize Christian husband-wife/family relationship viz-a-viz Christ-church relationship. In context, the “standards” and /or "meanings" of “obedience”, “ submission” or “be subject to” are not necessarily absolute and legally binding in that they should not and must not “de-harmonized"
husband-wife/family relationship.
Ephesians 5:22-23 is the foundation of Christian teachings on husband-wife relationship and family-building.
[2] “ Were not women and men created as equal - both being equal in God's own image?
God created man, Adam FIRST [Gen. 1:26/Gen, 2:7]. (a) By His words in God‘s spiritual image and likeness; (b) By His hands to form Adam's physical body from dust and (c) By His breath of life [blew it in through the nostril].
God created woman, Eve SECOND as “suitable helper” to Adam.[Gen.2:18, 21-23]. God created Eve genetically female from Adam’s rib [ = This is now bone of my bones .. flesh of my flesh.].
Both were created as equal in God’s own spiritual image and likeness to enjoy the rights to live as human beings of different gender.
Both were created not as equal in term of gender and total functions as human beings.. “Adam” was first among the two equals.”
